Dental sealants are a thin, protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars to prevent cavities. This clear or tooth-colored layer seals deep grooves and fissures, preventing food particles and bacteria from getting trapped and causing decay.
Sealants are NOT used on teeth that already have decay. Once a tooth has a cavity, it needs a filling, but sealants can help prevent that from happening in the first place!
While sealants are most commonly recommended for children as their permanent molars and premolars erupt, adults with deep pits and fissures can also benefit from sealants to keep their teeth healthy.
