What Are Dental Sealants?

Reduce the Risk of Cavities by Up to 80%

Dental sealants are a thin, protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars to prevent cavities. This clear or tooth-colored layer seals deep grooves and fissures, preventing food particles and bacteria from getting trapped and causing decay.

Sealants are NOT used on teeth that already have decay. Once a tooth has a cavity, it needs a filling, but sealants can help prevent that from happening in the first place!

While sealants are most commonly recommended for children as their permanent molars and premolars erupt, adults with deep pits and fissures can also benefit from sealants to keep their teeth healthy.

Who Should Get Dental Sealants?

At Danbury Smiles, we provide dental sealants for children and adults to help protect teeth from decay and maintain long-term oral health. Sealants prevent cavities from forming—once a cavity develops, a filling is needed instead.

Children & Teens
Applied to permanent molars and premolars as soon as they erupt (typically ages 6-12) to prevent cavities.

Patients at High Risk for Cavities
Those who want extra protection against decay in areas that are difficult to clean with brushing and flossing.

How Are Dental Sealants Applied?

The sealant application process is quick, painless, and non-invasive, typically taking just 10-45 minutes, depending on the number of teeth being treated.
Step 1: Teeth Cleaning – The dentist thoroughly cleans and dries the teeth.

Step 2: Preparation – A special gel is applied to help the sealant bond to the tooth.
Step 3: Sealant Application – The liquid sealant is brushed onto the tooth’s surface.
Step 4: Curing – A special light hardens the sealant for long-lasting protection.
Once applied, the sealants instantly begin protecting your teeth from decay!

How Long Do Dental Sealants Last?

Sealants can protect teeth for several years, and with proper care, they can last 10 years or longer.
During regular checkups, Dr. George Landress will examine the sealants and reapply them if needed to ensure continued protection.
